Zantac Lawsuit Update

Spread the love

The popular antacid drug called Zantac has become the subject of hundreds of lawsuits in the past year by people claiming that the drug included objectionable levels of a substance that is a carcinogen. The substance, known as NDMA was found in both Zantac and its generic version, ranitidine in 2019, causing it to be recalled by its manufacturer, Sanofi. Zantac was a common over-the-counter antacid sold in the U.S. at such retailers as Walmart, CVS, and Rite Aid. In the lawsuits, it has been claimed that consumption of the drug has led to various types of cancer diagnoses. These lawsuits are expected to grow, possibly into the thousands in the coming years.

Zantac and other ranitidine products were removed from public distribution after FDA testing revealed that it posed a public health risk. The lawsuits also claim that Sanofi and other manufacturers had knowledge about NDMA dangers but continued to sell the product without proper warnings to the public. Because of this and the known dangers and high levels of NDMA found in Zantac and ranitidine products, individuals who have used these products and developed cancer may be entitled to compensation for their medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages.

If you believe your cancer diagnosis is related to Zantac or its generic versions, you can discuss your case with a personal injury attorney at Casey Law Offices, S.C. in a free consultation. Call (414) 272-5564 or contact us online.

More About Zantac Defective Drug Lawsuits

In February 2020, the Zantac lawsuits were consolidated and sent to the Southern District of Florida. In September 2020, it was reported that more than 500 cases were pending. It has been speculated that class action lawsuits over Zantac and ranitidine may lead to settlements in the billions of dollars. These cases have been estimated to be settled in tiers based on the severity of the injuries involved. Tier One cases could be settled for about $500,00 while lower tiers may be in the range of $100,000 up to $250,000. The FDA has speculated than one in every 8,000 users may develop cancer that could lead to a lawsuit. Zantac has been in use since the 1980s and has been used by millions of Americans.

According to recent information, Zantac and its generics can lead to the following cancers:

  • Prostate Cancer
  • Gastric/Stomach Cancer
  • Esophageal Cancer
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Liver Cancer
  • Kidney Cancer
  • Bladder
  • Ductal Breast Cancer
  • Colorectal Cancer

In general, the basic criteria for bringing a lawsuit against the manufacturer’s of these drugs is that you took the drug daily or on a regular schedule for six months or more after which you were diagnosed with some form of cancer. It is now known that people ingesting Zantac and its generic may have been consuming extremely high levels of NDMA daily; these levels exceed the accepted safe levels for this substance.
