Crashes that result from wrong way driving are among the most dangerous a driver can experience, often resulting in head-on collisions. Despite this danger, these car accidents continue to occur on Wisconsin roads and highways. To combat this problem, the city is turning to technology. New sensors were recently installed on local freeway off-ramps meant to alert drivers that they are headed towards oncoming traffic.
The system is also set up to help inform police of wrong way drivers. Local officers are notified immediately when one of these sensors registers that a car is driving against traffic. The hope is that with the increased visibility and response time, the number of tragedies each year can be reduced.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) conducted research to determine which geographical areas presented the greatest danger, eventually settling on 11 high-risk areas. The DOT also determined that accidents are more likely to occur at night as well as when a driver is under the influence of alcohol. Previously, eight sensors of this type were put in place throughout the city, installed in 2012.
